HSW12

The HSW12 Assembler is written in Perl by Dirk Heisswolf. The assembler is actually a part of a larger project that he is working on - a full HCS12 IDE for Linux. With Dirk's permission I have seperated out just the Assembler and changed it to a GNU LGPL license so that people may use it in developing there own IDEs or assemblers/compilers.

My reasoning for seperating out the assembler was this: Dirk's project is great however most people and businesses these days still run Windows and not Linux as their primary operating system and the project is designed around being run on a Linux or compatible platform. I would like to show everyone how to use this project and how easy it can be to setup on a Windows based machine as the assembler portion runs great on any platform I have tested that supports Perl (Ex. Windows, Linux, BSD). Most Windows users ignore Perl as a Unix focused language but it can actually be quite portable between operating systems and quite flexible in its programming style.

If you are interested in trying the HSW12 Assembler on Windows you will need a few things:
  • Perl - I reccommed ActiveState's Free ActivePerl.
  • Compression Software - 7-Zip is a great project.
  • HSW12 - Get the latest zip from SoureForge.
  • The Basics - A working knowledge of the Microsoft command prompt. A tutorial can be found here or more here

Believe it or not while talking to Dirk I found out that he actually wrote most of the code for this assembler on a PDA while riding the train to work. It is pretty amazing to me what he was able to accomplish on a PDA. To download HSW12ASM or visit its Project Page head over to SourceForge.net.
